Tattoo Aftercare

Your new tattoo is a lifetime investment. The aftercare is an important part of the tattoo process and it’s all up to you. Firstly, leave the bandage applied after the procedure (Tegaderm usually) for three days, preferably. When it comes time to remove it, it’s easier to do so in the shower with the help of some warm water.

After removing the bandage, wash the area lightly with warm water and a small amount of soap. Be careful not to scrub the area to hard. Lightly rinse off any access blood,

plasma or ink from the tattooed area. Dab dry the area with a clean paper towel and apply the recommended lotion. I recommend using Lubriderm or another similar fragrance-free lotion. The tattoo will usually take between 10 and 14 days to heal. Apply the lotion 2-4 times a day or whenever it feels dry throughout the healing process and make sure the tattooed area remains clean and free from irritation.

You must remember that the tattooed area is essentially a fresh wound so you should treat it as such for the most part. Avoid picking at it or wearing restrictive clothes that may rub on it. As the tattoo heals it will begin to flake lightly and become itchy. Avoid scratching the area as picking off the flaky scabs can pull out the pigment and cause heavier scabbing that may leave you needing touch ups where the pigment didn’t take.

An alternative method to relieve the itching is to slap the area lightly or rub the area softly over top of the clothing.

Other things to avoid while the tattoo heals are Chlorinated water (swimming pools and hot tubs), lakes and rivers and direct sunlight. UV damage to the skin while the tattooed area is vulnerable can fade the pigment considerably. Keep the area covered if out in the sun or apply sunblock to the tattooed area if it is on a part of the body that can’t be covered. Any fading or patchiness due to your negligence will be fixed at your own cost.
